Barrow was Second Secretary of the Admiralty, a geographer, who ordered the British Arctic expeditions. Perhaps Utqiagvik should have been renamed for Robert McClure- the first Irishman to complete the N. W. Passage, sailing and sledging for the Admiralty. I wondered if some Viking reached Utqiag or encountered Inupiak in the Siberian Arctic.. Do Inupiak or Yupiks ( the latter arrived 10,000 BC) have many viks in their vocabulary? Inupiaks arrived from Sibir about a thousand years ago- maybe they had encountered wandering viks before the journey. Wild roots indeed.
