Sartre said that man is condemned to be free and that one makes out of life what one wills. Christianity is God’s effort to reach mankind.

Sakyamuni lived in a time of political change when his own royal power was displaced by invaders. He had good reason to see life as meaningless when everything he had materially was mostly lost and before good dentistry and health care existed. He wasn’t Jewish and had poor or no relationship with God. At least he wasn’t a polytheist.

 Some regard life as meaningless; assuredly those without faith, will or imagination could. It is understandable that many would regard governance as meaningless since it is often so messed up. Still it is better than the savagery of original sin.

Meaninglessness of existence could be an important teaching to train people to accept bad government, moral corruption and in helping to condition the populace to servility and subjugation to concentrated power while staying happy with dope.

Consider that there are different degrees of freedom of will or ranges of freedom comparable to range of motion and freedom of movement. One cannot move in every way one wills nor do anything one thinks of or even think of everything possible yet one may move and think to a certain extent. So one is free yet restricted by time, circumstance and structure.
